A Behind-the-Scenes Look at SHARE: Supporting Our Local Families in Need
As many in our community may not realize, there are families among us in Sherwood who could use a helping hand, especially in times of transition and uncertainty. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Sherwood SHARE Center to learn more about how this program supports families in need. Through this blog, I want to share their incredible mission, how they help, and how you can get involved.
What is SHARE?
SHARE (Sherwood Helping All Reach Excellence) is a program that serves families within our community who may be facing difficult times by providing essential needs like clothing, food, and household supplies. The program operates with confidentiality and compassion, ensuring that families can access help without stigma. Amy and Ursula, two dedicated women who run the SHARE Center, shared insights into how the program operates and the impact it has on the families who come through their doors.
Appointments and Confidentiality
“We want to protect families' confidentiality, so all of our services are appointment-based. Whether it’s volunteers or families coming in, everything is scheduled, ensuring privacy and that no one feels overwhelmed,” Amy explained during our interview.
This approach allows families to access the help they need in a dignified way. Volunteers are also carefully scheduled, making sure there are never overlapping times with families, further ensuring privacy.
How You Can Help
There are many ways to support SHARE, whether by volunteering or donating items. Volunteering is simple: all you need is to pass a background check, the same one required for volunteering at local schools.
“We accept new or gently used school-appropriate clothing for children from birth to graduation. Athletic wear, leggings, and elementary-sized shoes are in high demand. We also need full-size backpacks, hygiene products, and household supplies like toilet paper and laundry soap,” Amy shared.
For those interested in donating larger quantities of items, it's helpful to contact the SHARE team first to ensure they have the space and need for specific items.
Seasonal Needs and Year-Round Support
SHARE’s needs change with the seasons. As Amy mentioned, “In the fall, we look for coats and warm pajamas. During the holidays, we support families in need of Christmas gifts and holiday meals. As the seasons change, so do our needs, from back-to-school supplies to summer clothes.”
Amy also emphasized how much Sherwood has to offer and how grateful they are for the support they receive. “We get help from all corners of the community. For example, last holiday season was magical. Families and organizations, like the Sherwood Cruisers and The Ridges PAC, came together to create unforgettable Christmas experiences for local families who needed a little extra support."
A Life-Changing Impact: Stories from SHARE
One of the most powerful moments of our conversation came when Amy shared two stories of families who had been profoundly impacted by the Share program.
“We partnered with the Sherwood Library last fall to host digital literacy workshops for families who needed computer skills. We had a family who attended—newcomers to the area—who, after completing the six-week course, not only received a computer through a library grant but were able to find jobs, secure housing, and even get a vehicle. They still visit us, not because they need help anymore, but to bake for us or share their successes.”
Another touching story came from last year’s holiday season when a single mother with two children just missed qualifying for other assistance programs by a mere $8. “She had recently received a promotion, which was great, but it put her just over the income threshold to receive essential services like food stamps or childcare subsidies,” Amy explained.
SHARE stepped in to help this family and others like them by turning their pantry into a holiday shopping experience. “We served over 70 families during the holidays, making sure they had gifts under the tree and meals to share. I’ll never forget one family, in particular, who requested lasagna for their holiday meal. It was something they’d never had before, and the children still talk about that lasagna to this day.”
Moving Forward: The Future of SHARE
When I asked Amy what her biggest dream for the future of SHARE would be, she said, “I just want people to know we are here, ready to help. We can offer so much, whether it’s clothing, food, diapers, or simply being a family resource. No ask is too big or too small. We’re here with kindness, confidentiality, and a willingness to help however we can.”
Final Thoughts and How You Can Support
Visiting the SHARE Center was an eye-opening experience. Despite living in a generally affluent area like Sherwood, it’s easy to forget that not everyone is in the same position. SHARE gives families a sense of dignity, privacy, and, most importantly, hope.
I’m excited to spread the word about all that SHARE is doing and how we, as a community, can support their efforts. Whether by donating needed items, volunteering your time, or spreading awareness, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Let’s continue to work together to make Sherwood a place where everyone feels supported and cared for.
